Dacorum Schools Careers Fair
On Wednesday 24th October, we were pleased to attend & support the Dacorum Schools Careers Fair, hosted by the Enterprise Adviser Network at Shendish Manor. This was the first careers fair of the new school year that we have been to and were looking forward to showing the students the benefits of a career in construction.
The fair was opened by Dacorum MP, Sir Mike Penning, before the students gradually arrived over the course of the day. The event was attended by over 1000 students, aged 15-17 from nine mainstream schools & four Special Educational Needs (SEN) Schools across the Dacorum borough in West Hertfordshire, providing an insight into the range of routes into employment and the variety of jobs & industries available.
We are serious in addressing the skills shortage within our industry, and take every opportunity we can to encourage youngsters to enter into a career in construction. School visits such as this one is just one of the ways we aim to achieve this. Additionally, we are also committed to the 5% Club; an industry-led campaign, setting itself a target to reach 5% of its workforce to consist of apprentices, sponsored students and/or graduates within a 5-year time frame.
Also, our association with The Prince’s Trust is something we are very proud of, and we offer work experience to candidates as part of their “Get into Construction” programme. This gives an opportunity for young people from under-privileged and difficult backgrounds to discover construction and potentially gain employment. We have had considerable success with this in the past, having recruited several apprentices through this scheme.
